Abstract:

Software, whether used independently or indirectly (on account of being embedded in a system), continually evolves under multiple pressures, e.g., time-to-market, complex requirements, scale, etc. Such pressures can adversely affect its perceived quality during testing and experienced quality during use. Also, current industry practices lay greater emphasis on the adoption of agile concepts than on improving the technical quality of code.

This talk introduces the approach currently adopted within certain segments of industry for understanding and controlling technical software quality. Our experience here indicates that both proactive and reactive detection of potential issues, especially in large scale software development environments, can only benefit from a combination of solutions. The ideas to be presented demand the integration of program analysis techniques in different ways and perhaps across the development lifecycle.
