Abstract:

The miniaturization of computing technology has led to powerful, interconnected embedded devices that have revolutionized entire industries such as telecommunications, transportation, and industrial automation.

In this talk, I will share my 37 years of experiences designing embedded systems to solve real-world problems in industrial automation, medical and defense applications as well as teaching the subject to undergraduate and graduate students.

I will sketch the future of these devices as "all pervasive" or "invisible" computers of tomorrowthat will change our work, our leisure and our lives.I will use this to motivate some ideas for a comprehensive training in computer hardware design and embedded system design in the UG and PG curricula at IIT Kanpur, with an emphasis on creativity, innovation and hands-on development.

These ideas are influenced by my experiences in the industry, and are meant to create engineers who will lead this technological transformation.
