Abstract:

Structured overlays is an important concept and topic of research among peer-to-peer enthusiasts. Uniform hashing and ring topology have long been considered as important ingredients for many structured overlays. This talk walks through the historical developments, including a brief introduction to the concept of structured overlays. The talk will then explain why uniform hashing and ring topology have traditionally been popular in structured overlay designs and expose their inherent downsides. Finally we will showcase a solution to realize structured overlays without them, but with comparable performance guarantees.
