Abstract:

Telecommunications networks, today, are witnessing a major paradigm shift. Converged IP networks are replacing separate data and circuit- switched voice networks, and setting the stage for Service Providers to offer consumers rich multi-media services like VoIP, push-to-talk, multi-media messaging, IPTV, video conferencing, and gaming.

In order to ensure that the above-mentioned communication services deployed over "best-effort" IP networks are carrier-grade, Service Providers will need network management software to continuously monitor service quality, and take corrective actions in the event of service quality degradation. In this talk, I will provide a brief overview of the research program at Bell Labs India, with an emphasis on work we are doing in the area of network management. Specifically, I will describe probe-based monitoring techniques that we have developed for rating voice and video quality as experienced by end-users, and for detecting distributed denial-of-service attacks. I will also briefly touch upon our research initiatives to provide low-cost Internet access to rural villages, and peer-to-peer naming services. Finally, I will conclude by presenting algorithms for (1) automatically discovering the topology of multi-vendor Ethernet networks, and (2) determining optimal probe locations so that the root cause of network anomalies can be accurately pinpointed.

About the Speaker:
