Abstract :

There is a lot of talk about research in India now and many organizations have started research centers. There is sometimes a lack of clarity about what is research and its purpose. In this talk we will first discuss what research is (from CS perspective) and then discuss questions like what is the relationship between research and development, difference between academic and industrial research, applied and basic research, etc. We will then discuss what is the current scenario about research careers in India, and also what it means to be in a research career - both in terms of abilities one needs and the long term perspective.
