Abstract

Natural computing is a field of research which tries to imitate nature's way of computing. It strives to offer new models and paradigms of computing used by nature. P system is a branch of natural computing which abstracts from the structure and the functionality of living cells. In this talk we concentrate on rewriting P systems and discuss the efficiency and computational power of rewriting P systems. We also discuss the descriptional complexity of rewriting P systems. Note that P systems are not intended to model the functioning of biological membranes. Instead, such systems are intended to explore the computational power of cells and of various features of membranes.

About the Speaker

Dr. Madhu Mutyam obtained B.Tech (CSE) from Nagarjuna University and Ph.D. from IIT Madras in 1998 and 2003, respectively. He is currently an Assistant Professor at IIIT Hyderabad. His current research interests are natural computing, formal languages and automata theory, and low-power issues in VLSI Design. He has published over 25 technical papers in various international journals and conferences. He has been awarded the BOYSCAST fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology for the year 2004-05. He has also received a research project from the Department of Science and Technology under the "Fast Track Proposals for Young Scientists" scheme.
