Bandwidth Aggregation for Real-Time Applications in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Abstract

With the emergence of different wireless technologies, a mobile terminal equipped with multiple interfaces can achieve a much higher bandwidth by aggregating the bandwidth offered by the individual networks. In this talk, I will present an architecture based on Mobile IP that performs such bandwidth aggregation. While the use of multiple interfaces can improve overall throughput, it brings forth challenging issues in the form of excess packet delay due to reordering. For real-time interactive applications, late arrival is equivalent to packet loss. Thus, an important aspect of the architecture is the scheduling algorithm that partitions the traffic onto different paths such that the QoS requirements of the application are met. I will present one such algorithm, Earliest Delivery First (EDF), that ensures packets meet their playback deadlines by scheduling packets based on the estimated delivery time of packets. Some properties of this algorithm along with simulation results carried out using video and delay traces will be presented. It will be shown that EDF performs very close to an idealized single interface discipline and outperforms by a large margin approaches based on weighted round-robin.

About the speaker

Kameswari Chebrolu received her B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, in 1998. She received her M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California, San Diego, where she is currently a Ph.D. candidate. Her research interests include network architecture and protocol design for next-generation wireless networks, ad-hoc and sensor networks, QoS provisioning.
