Abstract

We propsoe a new mode of encryption which not only does encryption of large blocks of data, but also simultaneously authenticates the data in a single pass. Previously, one pass of encryption (called CBC), and another round of authenticating the data (e.g. CBC-MAC) was required. We also show that in a sense the new mode is optimal. The new mode is also highly parallelizable allowing terabits per second of authenticated encryption in hardware.
