Brief Bio

I joined Computer Science Department of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 2009 on Ramanujan Fellowship. Prior to that, I was primarily doing algorithm research in industry for 14 years in the fields of bioinformatics, image classification, biometrics, video compression and image processing. From 2004 to 2009, I worked at Fluidigm Corporation, a biotechnology startup, before deciding to make the industry-to-academia transition. At Fluidigm, I worked on algorithms for classification of images of protein crystals, for biomedical imaging instruments and for analysis of gene expression and genotyping data. I have also worked in software and semiconductor industry. Besides working in industry, from1992 to 1995 I worked in academia in Australia, as a regular faculty member, and in Canada, as a research fellow, where my interests were primarily centered at fractal geometry. There, in particular, I explored relationship of fractal geometry with theoretical computer science and its applications to modeling of natural images. I got my undergraduate B.Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1986 and MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from the University of South Carolina, USA, in 1988 and 1992 respectively, where my PhD/MS thesis advisor was Prof. Karel Culik II. I held a post-doctoral research position at the University of Western Ontario.
