Homework 5

In the gaze tracking experiment I had taken Hindi paragraph for reading. I want to first give a little background information on my knowledge of Hindi - I have studied hindi till class 8 only and I will rate myself as an average or may be a bit lower than that in terms of reading or communicating in Hindi.


1. a) I have bactracked my gaze on 4 - 5 occasions while reading the passage. Those instances are:

2.	Second instance of “akhkhyaan”	To make sense or meaning by combining the previous word once again
3.	Changing line number 2 to 3	I might have forgot which line I was previously on
4.	Start of 7th line	Rectify possible mis-pronounciation
5.	End of passage	May be just a noise after completion of reading




2. b) The longer fixations on words that I have identified are first instance of "akhkhyaan", " kastdayak", "kaaranvash", "kabuliwaala", "prafullit","swarneem","...kar ke mein woh saari...", "nairashya lila", "harivansh"



3. c) These 9 words were focussed for longer duration during my reading. I think a possible reason for this may be they are less frequently used words. Also getting the right pronunciations of few words might also be the reason for long fixation. A phrase was also fixated and this could be because I might have taken a few seconds to comprehend the sequence of the words present and interpret its meaning.
