Golden Jubilee Inter IIT Staff Sports Meet



Inter-IIT Staff Sports Meet is held annually every December among the seven IIT's with a spirit of fraternity, unity and friendship. It was the pleasure of IIT Kanpur, to host the most awaited Inter IIT Staff Sports meet in its Golden Jubilee year. The inaugural function began on the wintry morning of 20th December 2009 in the presence of Director, Prof. Sanjay G. Dhande who was the chief guest, and Mr. Sanjeev S. Kashalkar (Registrar). All the events starting from the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony clearly showed the hard work and dedication put in by the Organizing committee - Prof Arbind K. Lal (Chairman), Dr. Nihar Ranjan Patra ( Executive Member), Mr. Pradeep K. Mohanty( Secretary, Staff Gymkhana), Mr. Kamlesh Thapliyal (Joint Secretary), Mr. Sujoy K. Gupta (Treasurer) and Mr. V. N. Mishra (Executive Member). The Meet had the eight most popular sports in the country - Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Tennis, Football and a demo event of Chess, in both individual and team based categories.
For every sportsperson in IIT, this Meet is an ultimate platform to showcase his/her sporting prowess. With its eye on the general championship every institute had put its players through a hard and rigorous selection and training program, as a result of which this Meet saw only the best competing themselves against the best. IIT Kharagpur won the General Championship with IIT Kanpur bagging the silver in overall championship. IIT Kanpur won the championship in both Badminton and Basketball. It stood high not only in sports but also in being a good and humble host. The prizes were distributed by the Deputy Director, Prof. R. K. Thareja.
During this Meet, folk singer Mrs. Malini Awasthi enthralled the campus community with Avadhi and Bhojpuri songs.
