Sixth of March 2010, a day that will go down in the
history of IIT Kanpur. On this day, the history of 50 glorious years of
IIT Kanpur was buried deep in the ground by the honorable President of
India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil in the presence of several other
dignitaries.
To commemorate the completion of 50 glorious years, IIT Kanpur has built
a time capsule that will preserve its history in time. The 3-foot long
capsule is made of special type of copper and stores details of the institute
like research activities, photographs, R&D publications and reports,
DRPG annual report, etc. The material in the time capsule has been encapsulated
in special polythene and filled with nitrogen.
Sixth March 2010 was the launch of this time capsule. To grace the occasion
were present Smt. Pratibha Patil Her Excellency, the President of India,
Shri B.L. Joshi, Hon'ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Shriprakash Jaiswal,
Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Coal, Shri Anant Kumar, Hon'ble Minister
for Medical Health and Family Welfare, Uttar Pradesh and Professor M.
Anandakrishnan, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Madras. The entire campus
turned into a fortress with heavy presence of security.
The event began at around 11:30AM with the arrival of all the dignitaries
at the auditorium. In their gracious presence, the time capsule was lowered
in the ground at a location close to the auditorium. A marble rock transported
from Banswada, Rajasthan was placed alongside the site of time capsule
symbolizing solidity, integrity and permanence - attributes that IIT Kanpur
stands for. Then the Hon'ble President, Smt. Pratibha Patil planted a
sapling. It was followed by National Anthem and Saraswati Vandana. Succeeding
it were the welcome speech by Director, IIT Kanpur and addresses by other
dignitaries.
Around 12:20PM, an audio-visual presentation was displayed unveiling the
50 golden years of IIT Kanpur. Also, a nano satellite 'Jugnu' built by
students and faculty of IIT Kanpur was handed over to the Indian Space
Research Organization (ISRO). As it was handed over, the President congratulated
the students and the faculty. An hour long event ended at 12:30PM with
the recital of National Anthem.
Surely, this was a unique event and has created a buzz all over. It will
be remembered for years to come.
