IIT Kanpur launches its Community Radio

Community Radio is a subject which is gaining popularity thick and fast in the world of development and social communication. Amongst all the broadcasting media in India, radio has the highest penetration reaching even the remotest areas and serving the illiterates. Community Radio is intended to give voice to the unheard voices of the community. In past few years it has emerged as a powerful medium of communication in rural India. 26th March 2010 was a day when IIT Kanpur added another feather in its cap by launching its Community Radio. The entire launch ceremony was aired live from 10:00 to 10:30 am. It started with a 10-minute documentary on community radio by Amit Tripathi, the RJ for the station, followed by addresses of Dr. Sanjay Dhande, the Director of IITK, and few faculty members and students. Everybody was visibly excited and shared their opinions on the radio. To make this occasion more meaningful, a two-day workshop from 26th to 27th March was organized on Community Radio Awareness by Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) in collaboration with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. And IIT Kanpur played a perfect host. Dr. R Sreedher, Director, CEMCA, was also present. Also, there were representatives from various functional CR stations in Uttar Pradesh. Around 100 participants from across the various parts of India attended this workshop. Participants included enthusiasts who are keen in setting up radio stations in their respective areas. The workshop dealt with the various aspects of Community Radio like the purpose of CRs, licensing procedures, case studies based on the functional CRs in UP, setting up of a CR station and available technology, etc. To demonstrate to the participants as to how a live program is recorded, Community Radio again went live from 5:00 to 6:00PM on 26th March. During this one hour, a bus full of participants and coordinators toured the surrounding villages and as the bus toured a reporter named Seema Bharti from CEMCA interviewed the villagers. The villagers poured their heart out. From sharing their problems to discussing their aspirations to singing songs and reciting poetry they talked about everything. Their voices could be heard on air. The entire program was handled by Amit Tripathi at the station. The launch was a huge affair and was widely covered in media. IIT Kanpur has been disseminating seeds of knowledge since its inception and has taken another step in this direction. Community radio will cater to the needs and interests of the community. A whole gamut of programs will be aired at 90.4MHz frequency ranging from education, agriculture, health, environment, social welfare to classical music. The purpose is to serve the community within and outside (within a range of 10km) the campus. Work has already started in this direction.
