Alumni Convention



IIT Kanpur Golden Jubilee Alumni Convention: As part of Golden Jubilee celebrations an Alumni Convention was organized by the alumni association of IIT Kanpur from 2nd to 4th January 2010. Nearly 200 graduates of this esteemed institution from across the globe descended on the campus to grace the occasion. Many of them were accompanied by their families. The program incorporated several events such as lectures, talks, presentations, panel discussions, cultural programs and award ceremonies facilitating illustrious alumni.
The formal registration for Alumni Convention started at 10:00 AM on 2nd January 2010 at Outreach Building. About 80 alumni registered on the first day itself. The program started at 2.30 PM with the traditional opening ceremony of lighting the lamp by Deputy Director of IITK, Prof. Thareja, Secretary of Alumni Association of IITK, Prof. Kripa Shanker, and Treasurer of Alumni Association, Dr. Sameer Kandekhar. This was followed by Saraswati Vandana by Mrs. Pragnya Khandekar. The welcome speech was given by Prof. Thareja while Prof. Kripa Shanker informed the audience about the events scheduled for the next two days and invited an illustrious alumnus Prof. R. N. Trivedi to speak on this occasion. Dr. Sameer Kandekhar anchored the podium and gave a vote of thanks.
Later in the evening a cultural program was held at 7:00 PM. Titled 'Fastest Feet in Rhythm', the program featured Pt. Chitresh Das, a Kathak maestro and Jason Samuel Smith, a genius tap dancer and an Emmy award winner. The show started with two artists performing separate solos of Kathak and Tap dance. Soon there was a jugalbandi of Kathak and tap dance.
The whole audience was mesmerized with Pt. Chitresh’s demonstration on the sound of the railway engine with the bells on his feet. The excitement reached new heights when the two stars came together with the musicians in a great finale that had audience spell bound! The musicians - Abhijit Banerjee, Jayanta Banerjee, Umesh, Bumpy, Jiver and Paddy - who challenged each dancer to match different riffs and the two were engaged in a dance battle to match each other.
The following day, 3rd January 2010, IITK@50 award ceremony was held at 10:00 AM to honour the top 50 alumni achievements in the last 50 yrs. The awardees were elected using electronic voting. The event started with the lighting of the lamp by Mr. Abhay Bhushan, the President of IITKAA, Prof. Kripa Shankar, Dr. Sameer Khandekar and Prof. Sanjeev Aggrawal, the DRPG of IIT Kanpur. The 14 awardees who were present in the function were felicitated along with citations by the President and Secretary of Alumni Association, IIT Kanpur.
This was followed by a presentation by Mr. Adarsh Misra, President of Students' Gymkhana. At 12 noon, the auditorium was full to share the success stories of IITK alumni. Mr. Shanthanu Srivastava (DAA and entrepreneur), Mr. Amithab Thakur (IPS officer), Mr. B.M.L. Jain (entrepreneur), Mr. P.D. Rai (Member of Parliament), Mr. Dharamvir (retired from defense services) and others shared their stories. Former faculties of IIT Kanpur - Prof. R.N. Biswas and Prof. G.K. Lal interacted with alumni and students. At 8:00 PM, a cultural program ‘Sangeet Sandhya’ was organized by the campus residents. The program had all the elements of music and dance.
It started with a melodious welcome song ‘Phoolone ke bandanvar sajaye hai’ by students of campus school followed by Bharatnatyam dance by Ms. Akhila Anantharaman and her troop comprising Ms. Brunda, Ms. Rajitha and Ms. Gauri. There were several other performances where people showcased their talents. Some of them are as follows - instrumental western music presented by Prof. Sanjay Mittal on saxophone and his son Dhruv on the drums; guitar performance by Mr. Devanand; bandish by Ms. Pradnya Khandekar in raag Yaman accompanied by her son Master Pravaha on table; a beautiful song on Lord Krishna by Mrs. Amrawati Biswas in Chandrakaus raag; a Bhojpuri folk song by Dr. Lakshmi Narayan Tiwari and Ms. Pradnya Khandekar; violin performance by Dr. Venkatiraman presenting another style of Indian classical music, the Karnatic music. Finally, the evening came to an end.
As part of this event, research presentations were made by the faculty to cover new initiatives and centers of excellence at IIT Kanpur. Presentations included talks by Prof. N.S. Vyas on the ongoing research in the institute for developing technologies for railways, Bikram Basu on Biomaterials / Ceramics, Sunder Iyer on Organic solar cells, Prof. A. Sharma on Nano technology, Prof. Kamal Poddar on National Wind Tunnel Facility and Dr. Mukesh Sharma on Environmental Engineering.
