Hintrace App

This is an app that will facilitate children to practice and to initiate some pre writing skills in a meaningful manner. This app will teach the children to write the alphabets in hindi. It includes teaching "swar" and "vyanjan" to the children. This is a very useful app, since the children can keep practicing their writing as long as they want.

Levels in the game

1st level

The alphabets are shown with guided lines and the user has to just trace along the lines and write the alphabet.

2nd level

The alphabet to be written is shown on the side and the user has to try to copy that and write the same alphabet without the guiding lines.

3rd level

The user has to listen to the audio and write the alphabet that is called out without any hints or sample images.

In each level, the audio is also provided, which also helps in learning the sounds of the alphabets and how it is to be pronounced. So they learn the association of the letter formation and the sound of that letter.

Added Feature

The writing practice sessions of the user is recorded as individual screens in the memory of the gadget. This is such a useful feature because the special educator can later analyse how the user has performed in each level. One can also assess his current level of functioning in his writing skills.

Learning to Write

The learning of writing skills requires development of pre writing skills, which can be trained through play and instruction. Some of the pre requisites in their fine motor abilities are as follows:

The child should show a particular hand dominance in coloring and in using their hand for eating.

The child should be able to have a proper pencil grasp.

The child should have the understanding of directional terms( i.e. moving left to right) and the ability to recognise similarities and differences in forms/ designs.

The child should have the understanding and the ability to copy or trace vertical and horizontal lines. They should also be trained to draw the basic shapes like square, rectangle and triangle.

They should be able to use both hands together in a activity and the ability to coordinate the eyes and hands together.

And they should have the ability to maintain an adequate sitting posture to hold the notebook or any assistive aid and practice their writing skills.

Activities for children below 10 years to improve fine motor abilities

The following activities facilitate the pre writing skills in children.

Magnet games, where the children can be asked to put some magnetic objects in a sequence, re arrange them or sort them. The main focus here is to see how well they hold the objects and remove it against the magnetic force.

Playing with stencils in which they can be asked to trace within the boundaries of a stencil which will also improve their eye hand co ordination.

Completing simple mazes and practicing dot to dots for simple and easy images is also very useful.

Doing matching activity with the pictures or with words, that is drawing lines from one picture to another.

Stringing beads, this is the most common activity that is usually recommended for children, since holding the bead and inserting the thread both involves in improving the fine motor abilties.
