The first thing which strikes any one who enquires into the mutual connexion
of the Hindoo and mahommedan inhabitants of Oudh, is the total absence of any
jealousy and feuds between the two religions. Not only is animosity between
the two opposing creeds not assignable as a motive for any actions in the
present day, but even Mahomedan tradition does not account for any invasion
or acquisition of territory to the precepts of the Koran in extirpating
infidels. One holy war Oudh has knkown, but only one, and perhaps its ill
success taught a generation ... the futility of such expeditions. 73-74
