this dictionary is considered the most authoritative reference in the
bangla language.

haricharan bandyopadhyay was professor of sanskrit at shantiniketan.
he launched this lexicographic enterprise after
rabindranath asked him to compile a comprehensive dictionary. originally
published in instalments from b.1340-1353 (1932-1946). meanwhile, rAjshekhar
basu had published his chalantika as a handier reference.

the dictionary is notable for its detailed etymologies.

surprisingly the word kAju does not appear in HB, not even in the
appendix. the fruit (and the word) came from Brazil to Bengal with the
Portuguese, but is it so late an entry into bAnglA food?
